Origin I found this car set on the internet site "The Pits" (www.theuspits.com/) in the "Workshop" section (www.theuspits.com/workshop.htm). It was a DOS file called CART96.EXE and was prepared by Chris Spehert. I figured out how to convert it to the Mac and thought others might enjoy it! Thanks to Jan Kohl of "The Pits" for agreeing to put this file up on his web page. To Use Simply drop the "1996 CART Car Set" file into the "car sets" folder Ñ it is in the "data" folder within the "IndyCar" folder. Then fire up IndyCar II and, under the "Options" menu, select the "Car Set" menu item. The 1996 set should appear in the list of car sets. Simply select it and you are done. You will probably want to proceed to the "Driver Info" menu item (also under the "Options" menu) to change the first driver's data to reflect you and your car. (I have no idea who Cliff McDonald is Ñ perhaps a previous designer of this car set? An IRL driver? If you know, please e-mail me.) How It Was Converted Ñ For Those Interested The original CART96.EXE file, when unzipped, consists of four files: READ.ME Ñ from the original creator, Chris Spehert. DRIVERS.TXT Ñ contains the old 1995 driver info from the IndyCar II package Ñ was not needed. DRIVERS2.TXT Ñ contains the new 1996 driver info. PPG96.DAT Ñ contains the new car designs. Converting was fairly straight forward: 1. Using ResEdit, I opened a copy of PPG96.DAT (keeping the original safe). ResEdit asked if I wanted to add a resource fork to this file. I answered OK. 2. I create a new resource of type "TEXT". Then I opened this resource. I saw an empty window because it had nothing in it yet. 3. Now, keeping ResEdit open, I switched to the finder and opened the DRIVER2.TXT file using SimpleText. 4. I selected all the text in DRIVERS2.TXT and copied it to the Clipboard. 5. Next, I switched to ResEdit and pasted the text into the TEXT resource window. 6. I then used the "Get Info for PPG96.DAT" command under the "File" menu and changed the type to "Cset" and the creator to "Ndcr". 7. I then quit, saving all these changes along the way. 8. Finally, I renamed the file "1996 CART Car Set." Converting Replays DOS saved replays can be converted simply by changing the file type to "Rply" and the creator to "Ndcr". Converting Setups (Car Settings) DOS setups can be converted by changing the file type to "Garg" and the creator to "Ndcr". Enjoy! Jim Getzen
